Not particularly music based, but our mate had a hand in making this for Jaguar. It’s basically a 13 minute advert for a tast car, but its beautifully shot, is directed by Ridley Scott Associates and features Damian Lewis from Homeland and Shannyn Sossamon from Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.
We used to think that a bank holiday not spent getting wasted was a bank holiday wasted, however having given ourselves this one off, we’re feeling fresher than Will Smith. We’re off to watch Human Traffic at an outdoor cinema later and we have a few little treats to post up. Nice one bruvva!!!
The Church of Bread Club returns to our Sunday parish of Wildes for another seedy little floor show this coming Easter.
Following hot on the heels of Cowboy & Isles, we have three bands set for their Bread Club debuts.
First up we have fresh young Birmingham boys, Atlas. Having stormed into the top ten of Brums Reverb Nation chart, this is only their second ever gig and after rave reviews for the first we’re pretty excited to bring them to Leamington. Debut single How The Truth Tastes has been a massive hit at Bread Club HQ.
Next up we have hometown hero’s Hush who will be appearing fresh from headlining the Kasbah on the 15th March. Stand out track Delusions of Deity sounds like a lost shoegaze classic from 1990. Another fine band from the Leamington production line.
Headlining on the night we’re incredibly excited to be able to finally announce Heavy Waves. It feels like we’ve been trying to book them since last summer, and we know they’re well worth the wait. Btown stable mates of Peace, Swim Deep and Bread Club favourites Jaws, they’ll be playing for the first time in a while having hidden themselves away in the studio. This is the perfect opportunity to catch them live before they go massive.
Afterwards Bread Club resident’s will be DJing. Anyone who attended the last time we took over Wildes on a Bank Holiday will know to expect the unexpected. Especially after we’ve been on the rum!!!!

Luke from B-Town trio Heavy Waves talks boobs, doughnuts and which other Birmingham band he would be in!!!
Q1. Hello, how do and intros please?
A. Sup! I’m Luke – bassist and vocalist in Heavy Waves.
Q2. I heard you all met on the same course at Birmingham Uni, is this
true?
A. Nah, we met at a strip club. I was in there on business and Ed and Matt were the house band, I liked their groove so I asked them if they wanted to make fuzzy pop with me. It was a good day.
Q3. How would you describe your sound, I think I heard it labeled noisy
pop??!!
A. I think noise-pop is pretty accurate, we’re still defining our sound and we’re definitely making noisy pop music – but I think there’s a bit more of a shoegaze mixed in with surf element. Tommy from Wide Eyed described us as a mix of My Bloody Valentine and Beach Fossils which I thought was pretty cool!
Q4. Is being in a band from Birmingham opening any doors at the moment?
A. The whole ‘B-Town’ thing is shining a light on Birmingham and I think that it’s great, but I also like to think that we’d be doing alright even if there wasn’t this focus on the scene. The success of Peace and Swim Deep in particular has helped, but they’ve set the bar pretty high for anyone else to beat. I really do believe that this is gonna go down in history as an important scene like Madchester, and in the end I’m just happy we’re part of it.
Q5. Are you mates with any of them?
A. Yeah man, we get along really well with all of the bands here – especially the guys in Jaws and Wide Eyed, we’ve played together quite a few times and always have a laugh.
Q6. JAWS have played Bread Club a few times, what did they say about us??
A. Spoke to Con after the show and he was buzzing, he really enjoyed it. Definitely made me wanna play a BC night.
Q7. Which one track from the B-Town scene resinates the most to you?
A. Oh man, that’s almost impossible! There’s so many great tracks; ‘Bloodshake’ by Peace is one that sticks out in particular, as well as ‘Surround You’ by Jaws – but I think ‘Bleak’ by Wide Eyed is awesome. If I could be in any other Birmingham band it’d be them. Sick tune.
Q8. You played the much coveted VICE MAGAZINE ISSUE LAUNCH party with
Bread Club regulars LOOM, how did this come about?
A. Well, we got an email from Russ Tannen (Peace and Superfood’s manager) asking us to play Birthdays with Hatcham Social, we played and he liked it and offered us the Vice show. It was a pretty sweet night, The Old Blue Last in London is a great venue.
Q9. We see you have your first headline gig coming soon, what do people
get at a HW show?
A. Noise. Lots and lots of noise.
Q10. Is your single “Edward” about friendship???
A. Nah, it’s not at all. Well kinda maybe. It’s actually about people who don’t get along so well – or shouldn’t – and them overcoming that and hopefully leading to something better. Or some shit I don’t really know.

Q11. We want more tunes to play on repeat, when is this happening?
A. We have been in the studio recently with Gav Monaghan at Magic Garden recording a couple of tracks, which are sounding dope! We’re going back in on the 13th of March and hopefully we’ll be releasing our first single not long after that.
Q12. What’s the plan for 2013 gigs wise?
A. Well Matt and Ed are full time at uni so they’re pretty busy a lot of the time, we’re trying to do as many gigs as we can but we’re having to pick and choose shows around exams/assignments or whatever. Hopefully as we get further into 2013 we can play a lot more shows and hopefully a festival or two.
Q13. Any bands we should look out for this year?
A. Laced are gonna be big, I’ve heard really promising things about them and I’m really looking forward to seeing them live. Superfood as well, they’re gonna be the next B-Town super band. I know Wide Eyed are recording some demo’s soon… so hopefully there’s gonna be a lot more to come from them. I’m pretty stoked for 2k13 to kick off properly.
Q14. What would be your fantasy rider?
A. I think the band would enjoy having boobs as part of the rider. We like boobs. And donuts.

Cowboy are a band very close to Bread Clubs heart, as they are to anyone who has stumbled across their beautifully layered sound!!! BIG THINGS TO COME!!!!!!
1. Who are the Cow boys?
Cowboy are Tom Welby playing the drums, Hugh Clemons playing the bass guitar, Lewis Gardner playing the lead guitar and vocals and myself, Joseph on vocals and other things.
2. Were you all previously in a band called Youth or something like that?
Hugh, Lewis and I were in a school band called The Youth yes.
3. How did you come up with the name Cowboy? (shit question but I don’t care)
Hugh’s middle name is Dallas so it all just came together from there.
4. I think Bread Club gave you your first gig, how did that feel?
Yes, you did, it was a pleasure, to play alongside Don’t Move! and Hot Soles and to play for the people who came to see our first show.
5. You always bring a big and vocal army of fans and friends along to see you. This must be great when playing live?
Ofcourse, it’s always good to know you have fans in your hometown, and every time we’ve played, from Moo in June, to the end of Summer gig at Wildes and to the recent one at the Zephyr Lounge we’ve been grateful to be playing in front of an audience.
6. Is it true that you have a XXXXXL LA Shark t shirt that you all share? 🙂
I can neither confirm, nor deny these rumours of a communal La Shark shirt.
7. Which bands have you been compared to?
We sometimes get told we’re quite similar to the likes of Grizzly Bear, The Maccabees, Villagers and others, which, is obviously very pleasing to hear.
8. Which groups do you like as a band, and do the have an inpacted on your sound?
I think all three listed on the previous question would answer this as well in terms of having an impact on our music.
9. When you put your songs Hacienda and In Time on Soundcloud where you suprised with the massive response?
We all were yes, we were sat around a computer when we put them online and didn’t move out of our seats for a good few hours looking at people’s responses to them. Our friends were the first to hear our music after we shared it online and it just went from there.
10. You have great artwork for your songs, where did you get the inspiration?
We finished recording In Time and Hacienda late January/early February 2012 and between then and March, when we posted them online we were drawing up quite a few ideas but none really clicking. Then Lewis found these beautiful multi-exposures by a photographer called Oliver Morris which we all really liked and felt reflected our music in the form of a picture. So we thought we’d give it a go and so went to a nearby woodland with a camera and hoped they would come out alright when they were developed.
11. How did it feel to be tipped as one to watch in Fly Magazine by JAWS?
We get on well with those guys and it was very nice of them to give us a mention. We look forward to seeing them again soon.
12. Leamington Spa (home town) has a few great bands at the moment, who do you rate?
It’s a really exciting time for Coves at the moment, as with Sharks and their sophomore album soon. Don’t Move are a band we’ve enjoyed playing with a couple of times through 2012, I really like their song ‘(Love Me) If There’s One Thing You Ever Do’.
13. Did you know Lewis (band member) has the voice to make girls cry!!!! in a good way?
Lewis’ voice makes me cry as well.
14. Who has helped you on the journey so far?
Everyone who has listened and downloaded our tracks or shared them with friends has done their bit to help us and that’s really cool. Summer Sundae Weekender was our first festival appearance and that was special for us… Oh and Bread Club (Matt & Charlie) of course, you guys gave us our first show at Moo Bar and helped us throughout 2012 right up to your last at the Zephyr Lounge with Post War Years. I miss Bread Club already.
15. What’s the future for Cowboy?
Playing shows, we’re going back in the studio quite soon and we’ll see how it goes from there.
16. Right last question; One play on the jukebox, what would it be? CAVES have just played Talking Heads – This must be the place, so it can’t be that????

Bread Club has had an amazing year in 2012. We never thought we would be so busy!!!!
It’s fair to say it’s been a journey that we look back on with fondness and pride.

1. Hey Caves, intros please?
Hi, we are CAVES we are a band from Birmingham, we have an EP out and we’re
gonna record our new single in like december. Our music is getting sadder and
more angst filled by the day, we’re not the same band as when we started, back then we
loved the beach boys and ice cream now we love joy division and meth.
2. Why the name Caves (shit question but people want to know)?
I went to my Nan’s and she had an old book about caves and I figured caves
sounded pretty cool.
3. Are you all from Brum?
Yeah me and Adam live just outside in Halesowen, I heard it was nicknamed
brown town because of the heroin, I’m proud. We spend most of our time in
Birmingham though.
4. It’s a great time to be from Birmingham if you’re in a Band, why is it
blowing up at the mo?
I think it’s just because life round here sucks and good music comes from bad
places. Promoters round here are dealing well with it all too.
5. Which bands have helped you on the journey, so far?
JAWS have probably helped us the most cause we’re friends and that’s what
friends are for. Apart from them bands like YOOFS, WIDE EYED and DIY labels like
Distorted Tapes have helped a lot too. Oh and U2, we are real close!
6. Do you actually want to live by the Beach (as one of your songs say)?
No not really, everyone is writing surf songs at the moment and it just seems
weird cause we all live in the city. So that’s CAVES version of that. Fuck beaches I always get sand in my eyes and seagulls piss me off.
7. We love the fact you have music out on Cassette Tape, how did this happen?
Because Adam our drummer is good at being in a band and somehow him and
DISTORTED TAPES magically met and with help from our artist Jack, who we keep in
our basement the tapes were born and look great. You can buy them on the DT

8. Why do you have a tune called Keanu Reeves?
Because the song just feels like a big sad weird noise and when ever I think
of big sad weird noises Keanu Reeves comes to mind. He ruins Coppola’s Dracula
but there are some lyrics referencing his good movies too like BILL & TED and
POINT BREAK! Too cool.
9. Who’s a worst actor Keanu or Jean-Claude Van Damme?
This is worst than Sophie’s choice. Keanu is bad and when you watch one of
his movies you really see how bad he is but it gives me hope. If someone that
bad can be a movie star I can live off rock n roll. But JCVD on the Coors light advert is too much, so he wins.
10. “There’s a demon in my brain he’s got friend’s” (Caves – Rich Kids), has a
very Nirvana edge. Are they an influence?
They are my favourite band and that stuff just rubs off on you. but yeah we
recorded that EP for so cheap and I had no pedals apart from reverb so now we can really make the sounds we want.
11. Which bands play apart in the Caves sound?
Bands like The Smiths, Joy division, Deerhunter, MBV, WARPAINT, NMH… I could
go on forever all I do is listen to music really, from jazz to trance.
12. Who would you most want to play a gig with?
Mmmm maybe Warpaint or The Twilight Sad.
13. What are the plans for 2013?
Well we have some recordings booked up, so release a single and just go with
the flow man. Maybe do a world tour!!!!
14. Which towns and cities would you most want to play?
Everywhere like from Austria to New York. It would be cool to play somewhere
that were not allowed like wall street.
15. If you could punch a fish, which one would you go for?
I’m a vegetarian so I probably wouldn’t punch it unless it was life or death
so probably the creature from the Black Lagoon because he is scary.
16. One play on the jukebox, what would it be? JAWS just played Michael
Jackson – The Way You Make Me Feel, so it can’t be that???????
